DON’T FEEL 100% HEALTHY TODAY

Bunga dan Kumbang

I have been coughing and having running nose last night and could put myself to self maybe around three in the morning.  In my house I am the last to suffer the attack, as my wife and nephew had been coughing for the last two weks, and a number of the staff in my office had their MC as they were unable to perform their duties , especially the programme hosts.

Some people believe that this is the coughing season - when asam trees, especially the mangoes and kuini  are bearing fruits. Those with scientific mind try to explain that the coughings and running noses are caused by the pollens and dust from those flowers. May be they are right and may be there should be too many asam trees around. But asam fruits are tasty and I like them very much, either fresh cuts or blended and enjoyed as fresh fruit juice.

By the way the illustration here is not of asam flowers, but the flowers I found growing in pots in front of my house in Kuching recently. I like the flowers and bees theme it portrays here.  My wife took the picture.

READING ASSIGNMENT: TIRANI

tirani-001.jpg

I have a reading assignment. I am reading Tirani by Beb Sabariah.  The 352 pages novel is Beb Sabariah’s first novel and one of the 20 novels recently published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, and would be launched sometimes in June.  I will be presenting a commentary paper during the launching, so I was told be Beb Sabariah.

Wow. Swell. It would be a great honour to present a paper and be amongst some 20 other Malay literature researchers and scholars though I will not be the first time I present such paper.  I have on a number of occassions presented papers at state and national seminars and forum on literature and culture, and some of those papers are now included in some books published bt Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

However this time it is special because the writer is a nearly sixty year old  respectable lady who had started producing fiction pieces after attending my writing classes in the 1999 a few years prior to here retiring from a teaching profession. She had attended every one of the weekend classes organised by Gabungan Persatuan Penulis Sarawak (GPPS) (now defunct), and conducted by me and other local writers such as Jais Sahok, Hazami Jahari, and even the SEA Write Award winner Jong Chian Lai. And I am proud to say that she is one of the most prolific participants of the programme.

I came to know Beb Sabariah or Hajjah Bibi Sabariah binti Abang Awet while I was in Form  Two in the Binatang Government Secondary Schoool (now SMK Meradong) and she was amongst the second intake trainee teachers at the neighbouring Rejang Teachers College (now Institut Perguruan Rejang). The school  and the college are only separated by a small Bakong River. Of course I was just one of the kids in a new school in the middle of the jungle then, and Bibi Sabariah was well known as one of the beauty queens admired by all the male and envied by the lady trainees  at the next door higher learning institution.

Well, I only know of such name and had seen her from some distance on a number of occassions, but I am sure she never know about my existence until she followed and become interested in literary writings for which I have curved some succeses for myslef later. We only met and knew what each other’s had been through when we met in 1999 in the writing workshop and I told her about myslef being the product of BGSS. She laughed gleefully when I told the class on the first week of the writing workshop that she was a beauty queen in the college.

Beb Sabariah, (one of her  two names in her identity card) went on to have her puisi and cerpen  to be punlished in the local paper Utusan Sarawak.

Beb Sabariah didnot stop learning and later on she registered and undergo various courses and workshops through the recommendation of the local Dewan Bahasa dan Pustala branch and on her own, including those held in Semenanjung, including the Kepezi workshop conducted by the well known novelist Zaharah Nawawi. And I am proud to say that Kak Beb (as she is fondly referred to by many) since then had won a number of awards and competitions. Her cerpen and puisi had been published in papers such as Mingguan Malauysia, Berita Minggu and even the prestigeous Dewan Sastera.

I feel very proud when she rang up and sent me an e-mail inviting me to present a paper on Tirani. Thanks, Kak Beb. I will be commenting on Tirani as a study in Feminism. How about that?.

Bravo Beb Sabariah, you proved that age does not really matter if one works hard enough to achieve something outstanding as you did.

ORGANISING A TALK SHOW

It might look very simple - get somebody who can answer questions to the studio and the show is on. Wow, I wish it is as simple as that.  However there are various elements and inputs to be considered in order to produce an interesting and informative radio talk.

Firstly, the producer has to think of an appropriate theme to be discussed. Of course there are countless theme that could be put forward for discussion. It could be a general topic such as changing weather pattern  for the last few years, the agricultural development in a particular district, youth activities to specific and hadtalk material such as the Malay sovereignty in Malaysia, non-Malaysia muslims, or turtle conservations in Malaysia.

The relevancy of any topic depends on the current issues and talk of the town or the national legislative gallery. Of couse the food prices, the short supply of rice and the latest happenings in the Academy Fantasia or a Down the Memory Lane episode would appeal to certain groups.

Once a topic is selected the producer has to think of the aproach or the outcome needed from the show he is producing. he has to regfer to specific instruction or guidelines laid down by his institutions or the party he is answerable to.

He would be making a choice between an interesting topic which would be considered inappopriate by his seniors  and banal and irrelavant topic which his seniors would consider as brilliant.

Having a topic chosen means he has to look for a speaker or a couple of speakers who can dig out the points or gists he wants to be made known or relavant to the issues at hand. He can have a academician who can explain and elaborate the issues by giving the necessary definitions, comparative materials, data and may be quotations which might unpalatable for most of the easy listeners to understand, or an activists who might not be able to give an in depth elaboration but  interesting anecdotes, but does not contribute much to the understanding of the issues concerned.

After deciding the ‘artists’ to be invited, he has to contact them and discuss with them about the talk show he is offering for them  to discuss.  It should be remembered that rarely does a producer get his men or expert at the first telephone call. The person he is inviting might not be around on the stated date, or he has prior appointment. It means he has to have a list of invitees at hand who are equally able to take on the topic.

The producer then has to design the format or the questions to be asked by his anchor or anchors while on the air or recording the talk. Herewith he has to apply all his skill in puting together elements like interviews with various group of people (known a vox pox or vouice of the peoples), recorded inerts in form of materials from indepth research, and views exprassed by experts and the authorities concerned.

Having the talk show format he has to brief the production team which include the technical staff of the coming show.  During the briefing he might learn about some shortcomings he has to overcome. The studio might not available, or the telephones might be faulty or the recording facilities neewd servicing. All these need attention and actions to be taken.

The producer also has to reconfirm with his guests before the actual date of live broadcast or recording because the other party might be to busy or preoccupied with other commitments which to him/her are of higher priority.

On the very day the show is to be broadcast live or to be recorded he has to make sure all the equipments and notes, musical pieces and so forth are in the places, and he must be present during the broadcast or recording.

THE MORNING SESSION 07 05 2008

Filed under: ROUTINE on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 by saieedriss | No Comments

I wrote an entry about this morning session, but some how when I tried to pulish it the whole script disappeared.

Among other things this morning I registered myself to be a member of Bluehyppo fraternity, thus this blog was born. After that I was requested by Norbani to entertain an office guest in the Holding Room. Wow. What do I know about the guest.

As I entered the room a lady introduced herself as Akmar. She came from a telecommunication company promoting a software or a programme similar to YM video conferencing but was caliomed as faster and safer, dan able to accomodate four persons at anytime.

After sometimes a European man came who through his bizcard I came to know to be Peter C Darg, the CEO of DVTEQ, the producer of the said communication programme.

Shortly after that Hasnita passed by and I called her and introduced he as the Brand Manager. As Hasnita started to negotiate Openg came and I handed over the guest to them.

As I appropached by working desk Fahmi rang up informing me that Encik Shukri Abdullah of MIHAS would only be able to be on the air for an hour tonight. I instructed him to get Tuan Asmawi as to be an ooficer from Jakim who can answer questions on Halal concept, as MIHAS is an international exhibition of halal products. When I rang up Tuan Asmawi he said that he was on line with Fahmi, meaning that my instruction was being carried out. That was what I told Openg when he came back to the office.

I continued working on my scheduled tasks of the day and at about 1300 Openg invited me to lunch at the cafeteria.

WHY ORANG SERDENG?

Filed under: BIODATA on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 by saieedriss | No Comments

Portait of late 1960-s

1969 - Form Five

Well, I was raised up as a kid in Kampung Serdeng in the Binatang Disctrict in 1950 until I left Serdeng for Daro in 1963 to continue by schooling. However, since then I have not been back to stay in Serdeng. I continued my education in Binatang Secondary School (now SMK Meradong) until 1969, after passing my Form Five and in the first half of 1970 I was in Methodist Secondary School, in Sibu. (All the places named are in Sarawak, Malaysia)

I was in Saratok Scondary School teaching basically Bahasa Malaysia during the second half of the year and the next year I was off to Kuching starting to work as a translator for some 20 years in RTM.

Well I believe it is justified to give the title Orang Serdeng to my blog. Les, I would be branded as Si Tenggang or unthankful to my root.

Hello world!

2003 - Divisional Controller of RTM Sibu

Hello everybody. I am now a Hyppblogger.com member. I write in Bahasa Melayu in my other blog, however I decided to write only in English in this blog. I have a good reason for that. Through this blog I am addressing the whole world, therefore I have to communicate in a global language that I know and more readers know. I concluded that the language would be English.

My English might not be as agile as my Bahasa Melayu, but I was educated in English and for that 20 years I was working with both English and Bahasa Melayu, as a translator and later on as an editor of radio and television news.

I am an RTM retiree and presently I am a Content Editor (on contract) at Radio24 Bernama, functioning like a KBR in RTM station in the regional and state level.

Here I am coming back to face the world in English.

How do I fare so far?

I would always welcome you to my site anytime.
